Maple Class Art: Seascapes

This term, Maple class has been creating beautiful seascapes while exploring shades and tones, shapes and patterns, horizontal brushstrokes, and collage.

We looked closely at seascape paintings by Turner, Monet and Hokusai and talked about the different shapes and lines we could see. We then divided our pages into sections and used different types of lines to show a calm, choppy, rough and stormy sea.

We learned that Monet often used horizontal brushstrokes in his paintings. Inspired by his work, we practiced these brushstrokes in our sketchbooks, carefully mixing colours to create the different shades of a calm sea.

Next, we created a collage of a calm sea using horizontal strips of paper in a range of sea colours.

We then explored the style of Turner by creating stormy seas. We mixed different shades of colour and experimented with expressive brushstrokes and lines to capture the movement of the waves.
Finally, we worked together to create a collaborative seascape collage, showcasing all the skills we have learned, including using lines, horizontal brushstrokes and collage techniques to represent a calm sea.

We are very proud of our seascapes and all the new artistic skills we have learned this term!
