Willow Class Art: Indus Valley Civilization

Willow Class have been learning about the Indus Valley Civilization throughout the term. This ancient civilization stretched along the Indus River from what is now northeast Afghanistan into Pakistan and northwest India.

As one of the oldest civilizations in the world, India has a rich artistic heritage, and the children explored traditional block-printing techniques that have been used since the 12th century to create bold, vibrant patterns. In their earlier art lessons, the children designed and created their own printing blocks. Each child chose a design inspired by Indus script, Indian patterns, or a combination of both. Today, they printed their designs onto paper and fabric, aiming to recreate the striking, colourful prints characteristic of Indian culture.

The children carefully painted their chosen colours onto the string blocks and used rollers to press them down firmly. They took care not to apply too much paint and thoughtfully considered the best techniques to achieve their desired results.
